CELLAJAZZ JAM SESSION

The monthly Jam Session is held on the last Wednesday of every month.

The house rhythm section starts the night off and musicians and singers of all ages and abilities are encouraged to participate in a friendly, creative and non-competitive jam session atmosphere.

Horn players and guitarists should bring their own instruments, and there is a drum kit, double bass, guitar amp and PA system.

Piano players should check beforehand with as some nights we will arrange for an electric keyboard to be setup for the evening.

If you are not a musician you are very welcome to come and listen to the music.

10 JAM SESSION TIPS

1. Get there early and make yourself known, either by writing your name and instrument on the sheets on paper provided or by speaking to Rikki or Frank on the door.
2. Come prepared with a couple of tunes that you know well or have been practising.
3. Always feel that you can suggest a tune that you would like to play.
4. Come in a group of friends or students and ask to sit in together.
5. If you are a singer, bring some clearly written out charts for the rhythm section, especially if your songs are in different keys to the standard real book versions.
6. If you are a beginner or not a very confident player don’t be shy about playing. Ask the rhythm section to play something a bit easier or slower.
7. If you are not an experienced jazz player you need to be aware that most jazz tunes have a definite chord sequence and structure that is generally adhered to throughout the piece.
8. If you don’t know about playing over jazz chord changes it doesn’t mean that you can’t participate. There are plenty of tunes and styles that have a simpler form and consist of setting up a groove over one or two chords. Let the rhythm section know that you want to play in this style.
